Green tea may help with weight loss in addition to fighting cancer, heart diseases and other diseases. Some studies show that the brew speeds up metabolism and suppresses appetite. Green tea, which is rich in antioxidants, may not promote weight loss on its own.

For people to experience considerable weight loss, it’s advisable for them to combine green tea with healthy diets and regular exercises. It has many ingredients which exhibit chemical and biochemical properties. Green tea like any other variety of tea contains polyphenols- substances which have antioxidant, antiviral and anticancer properties.

Green tea has caffeine, which increases thermogenesis and fat oxidation- processes responsible for burning of fat and calories. The tea works like catechol-O-methyltransferase, an enzyme that regulates appetite. Green tea polyphenols such as catechins increases body metabolism, a process that is majorly responsible for weight loss in people. The catechins help the body to burn calories, lower cholesterol and reduce body fat.

These types of polyphenols have also shown to have anticancer and anti-inflammatory properties. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a catechin contained in green tea, have moderate weight loss effect on overweight people. It’s evident that men who drink green tea lose up to 5.3 pounds and experience a greater decrease in body fat, waist size and body mass index (BMI). For people to experience these benefits, it’s recommended for them to take 4 cups of green tea a day.

Green tea boosts energy expenditure by causing slow release of glucose. This also reduces the levels of insulin in the blood and helps the body to burn fat. Green tea catechins inhibit formation of fat cells by preventing movement of glucose in the body.

Green tea is safe for adults, but excessive intake of the brew may cause side effects such as nervousness, headache, irregular heartbeat and sleep problems. The caffeine may also worsen health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and anxiety.
